View Full Version : Distributor Cap ?
How long should a distributor cap on a MSD pro billet distributor be good for? Mine has one season on it and when I pull it, it's not looking too good inside

I replace mine every 10 years whether it needs it or not. LOL. Seriously, I always thought it was one of those "inspect and replace as needed" items.

Hey Bruce, I have had the same problem with the cap. I'm not sure why, but the inside looks like crap, I'm thinking the fact that it sat all winter the moisture in the air took it's toll on the cap. I would think a little cleaning would be enough, but I haven't done that yet. I had some starting problems so I sprayed a bit of WD-40 in the cap and BANG, she fired right up. Maybe next year I'll bring the cap in the house and store it in a climate controlled environment.
Bruce, and others....where should I look for the best deal on an MSD distr.?

See what kind of a deal Dave can get you. He's been very competitive for stuff I didn't think he sold. I got my Holley 950 and my March system through him and both were priced very competitively. In fact, the price I got on the Holley proved to be better than the staff price at Lordco, one of our local auto parts retailers.

Hey Rick, I bought mine through SD Performance and the price was the same as Summit. Dave may be a bit more work to get a hold of, but my thought was if something wasn't quite right with the part, I could talk directly to him as opposed to an online company. Another thing to consider, I'm not sure if you can get the MSD distributor to work without having the MSD box also???
Thanks Y'all....My contacts inside the cap look a bit fried, I'll see if I can post a pic or two.
Shack, you're funny man, how about a special chamber for the cap, like that scene in Terminator where they're trying to shut down the company that (in the future) constructs the evil SkyNet system. Two guards with keys are needed to simultaneously turn vault keys to enter a walk in chamber, then another key opens a little door , a shelf pops out and on it is a hermetically sealed jar type thing with the terminator hand (that they found 20 years ago) or in your case the MSD cap inside. LOL, ROTFLMAO
Rick -I have the pro billet model and it was kind of expensive, so shopping around is a good idea...I got mine thru SD but you could also try summit or jegs for good low prices or our own local guy Mike D at Precison Speedworks. BTW, I have a Crane ignition so you don't need a box from MSD.
