View Full Version : chrome trim on '67 gto
I've been removing trim and cleaning parts on the '67 and came across a
couple fasteners that are new to me. They are shaped somewhat like a
butterfly with a long curved tail. They secure the chrome trim to the
lower door panel. I managed to remove the trim but there must be an
easier way.... Any suggestions??

It sounds like you made out better than I did because you still have the clips. My trim pieces came off easy after I removed the screws from the end clips since the "butterfly clips" were rusted through in many places and fell apart. I have managed to find 4 replacements, good for one door. Since the door trim is not the same height from front to back, these clips are designed to rotate to a snug position and use the spring like tail to hold them in that position. They push into round holes in the door skin and can be pushed out from inside the door shell. I think they can also be carefully pried out with a putty knife slipped under the trim since the shoulder on the post is beveled in both directions. One of the problems besides rust holding them in place is that a sealer is used around the post to keep moisture from getting into the door and this stuff makes the clip stick in the hole. It might also be possible to use a flat blade with the end bent up to slip under the trim and rotate the clip against the spring until the "wings" disengage. Good luck.
Thanks for the advice. I did also find that by removing the door panels life became easier.. Fortunately no rust just dust !! Smoke em' if you can. Pete
