Pretty weird car you found there Al. I would check to see if the rear tail panel was welded in, I can't see Pontiac taking a left over 66 GTO body and stamping a 67 lemans vin on it. I also would like to see the PHS doc on this car. Is it worth $3500? Maybe if this car is a unique piece, but I would not hold my breath. :-/

HMMMMMMMMMMM,
Sounds interesting; The tail panel definitely GTO, as REEDSTER said check for any welding/ repair in that area. Might be worth sending to PHS if you're interested. Someone there may know more about it if it indeed is a GTO bodied LeMans.
Heels in the headliner.......sounds like my '67 back in high school. Always a good date in that car!
Brad
That's a cool car and worth scoping out more!
If the seller thinks a 326 is orgasmic, I wonder what she thinks about a Ram Air engine? Maybe punch a hole past headliner thru the roof? ;)

It certainly is a strange one. From what I can see, it looks like a 67 nose on a 66 body. The Lemans letters on the quarter look 66, and the lower stainless molding looks 66 also. Did you check the engine date code? I'm in agreement with Kevin, it sure seems unlikely that Pontiac would hold over a 66 body for any reason, but you know stranger things have happened. Keep us posted with what you find out. Hey, I've got a great idea. Why don't you buy my 66 GTO body, and put the nose on that car. It would look like a 66 GTO. * ;D

Uhmmm, I was able to spend alot more time looking around the car again with the owner there this time. Appears to be a victim of an early early rear ender, replaced from the doors back. The only real evidence of this is that the last 8 inches of the frame show damage on both sides. Who ever did it musta done it with in the first year when there were no '67 LeMans's in the wrecking yards yet and it was a nice job, I seen no evidence on the body itself of any repairs, but one can't deny the damaged frame rails. The holes from the GTO emblems were also filled in.
As far as it being the first '67 Lemans? NOPE! The body sequence number is #1398 and the date code is second week in Oct, they started building the cars in August. When I broke the news to her, she was little more than upset, told her that since she was telling me how much she loved her car, I suggested that she keep it because it is worth more to her than selling it. In my opinion, the car's only worth about $300-500. As for what the title says... I haven't seen it yet, but as I was looking at the car, she pulled out the registration. She said it also said that the reg, also says it's # 1. I did see that, what she was refering to was that statement on there that says, 2850/1967/1. What she thought was that it meant that there were 2850 cars built in 1967 and that car was #1. I had to explain it to her that it meant that the value at the time of registration was $2850, for the 1967 car and then it refered to department 1. She wasn't impressed. She still maintains that the title says it's number 1. I'll still check that out, but I say that.... since she's divorced and homeless that she's grasping for straws. Breaking the news to her about her car wasn't a pleasant thing to do. Anyone interested in the car? I'm not. Oh by the way, the '66 GTO that the parts came from was dark blue. according to some paint I found on the right front fender and the trunk lid.

Mystery solved!!
Good detective work Al, I knew it sounded a little fishy, especially after all the info you uncovered. It was a good story though!
