I am sure this has been covered but I couldn't find a thread so... I am about to start my engine rebuild. What is the best pontiac blue (67) engine paint for my motor and do I need to use primer?

Plasti-cote #227 is the color for your engine. BUT I think its much 'bluer' or less 'greener' than the original engine paint that Pontiac used. I used it on my '69 engine and will be using it on the NMM that goes back in next month and the new 462 W/ Edelbrock heads, intake, RAIV manifolds, etc. PRIMER is a must, I and others have experenced large area's that seem not to adhere, yet we all know how to prep the surfaces. I am going to use 'ruddy brown' instead of grey, hopefully it will darken the engine color. HOTROD64

Bill Hirsch is the best on the market. Highest temp rating and designed for restoration uses. You can buy it by the quart or in an aerosol can. It's not
cheap, but it's the best.
"Highest quality, hi-temp., hi-gloss. Over 50% of high point scoring cars shown at leading car shows all over the world have Hirsch Engine Enamel of their engines. Gives you a factory look finish. Rated to 500 degrees F. (The highest on the market.) Nothing else compares."
They list it as 67 - 72 Metallic Blue (should be 67 - early 70)
http://www.hirschauto.com/acb/showprod.cfm?&DID=27&CATID=1&ObjectGroup_ID=1
They recommend not priming any cast surface, only smooth surfaces, and the key is to spray just a dusting over the exhaust ports and intake cross overs for each coat. So it should take about 5-8 LIGHT dustings to cover these areas Just enough to where you can't see the bare cast, and NO more.
If you build up the paint in theses areas it will burn off Much faster than if done using this method. Mine lasted about 4 years about 1,000-2,000 miles a year before it was showing signs of discoloration.
Plasticote or Duplicolor will do, and you can just go to the store locally and get them. But they wont hold up as well.
Hope this helps - Brett!
