I was hoping somebody more up on 68-69 GTO's than myself can help me with this.
Did they make a 1968 Ram air GTO aside fron The Judge? If so how many and how can I tell just from looking at it?(the car,not the motor).Did they do anythig different with the scoops besides opening them up? (see attached)Any info would be great!
Thanks !

Yes they made 68 ram air 1 and 2 motors. Scoops were open, no cable to open them like Judge. Car had upper ram air pan and Ram Air II had round port exhaust similiar to Ram Air IV. These cars are hard to come by and up there on price when found.

Thanks for the help guys,I appreciate it.What got my curiosity up were these chrome inserts in this hood.I have never seen them on a car before so I ws wondering if they are aftermarket or does it mean this could be a Ram air car???

Just so we're clear. The Judge was only made from 1969 to 1971. They did make ram air equipped GTO's in 68.

If so how many and how can I tell just from looking at it?(the car,not the motor).

The only way you can tell just by looking at the car is if you know that it is 100% original. The best way to tell if this car is an original ram air car is to get the PHS on it. Short of doing that, if you can check the block and if the engine is original it should have either an XP for an automatic equipped car or and XS for a 4-speed equipped car stamped on the front of the block next to the timing chain cover on the passenger side.

The actual scoops should just be the standard open kind. Not chrome. The only differences I know about the hood scoops color concern Ram Air equipped Judges. I believe they were all black. The hood scoops in 68 were not able to close. If it started to rain, you were supposed to get out and put back in the closed ones. ::)

Just so you know, there were two different versions of the RA motor in 68. The original RA motor for 68 was 360 horsepower at 5400 RPM. In mid march they created a new motor from the block up called the RAII. It came with new cylinder heads with revised chambers and round exhaust ports, lightweight valves, larger pushrods, forged pistons and an Armasteel crankshaft. These motors were only available in cars ordered and built after April 1st of 1968. The Ram Air system itself was never installed by the factory. It was shipped in the trunk and put on by the dealer. You could also order the Ram Air system over the counter for your GTO even if you didn't have the motor. RA equipped 68 GTO's are somewhat rare. Here are some production numbers:
68 RA Hardtop with 4 speed --- 757
68 RA Hardtop with Automatic--183
68 RA Conv with 4 speed ------ 92
68 RA Conv with Automatic ---- 22
------------------------------------
1054 total RA 68 GTO's
Hope you find one!!

Thanks for the info. After I posted the question I started looking thru my books and checking web sites and discovered my "68 Judge"error..OOPS! Also, where did you get those production numbers from?everything I have or looked at yesterday does not have any and if there is a book out there,I'd like to pick it up.

What got me on this ram air kick was this car I found yesterday with the chrome scoop inserts...I have never seen them before and was wondering if it was something special or just Ricky Racer throwing some chrome at his car!I am a 64-67 fan, just out doing some recon for a friend.

Thanks again guys,

Thanks again guys,

Alot of that info and the production numbers are from a book called "GTO Recognition Guide" by Paul Zazarine. It is long out of print.
