***UPDATE: Event pushed back to the 28th***
OK, I've ordered my lift. It should be here late next week, so I'm having a garage warming/lift install get together on Saturday the 21st!!!! Milt(Bookbinder) has graciously let me ship to his business and use his delivery truck to bring it to my home. We'll unpack it in the back of his truck and offload by hand. We'll need to have at least 4-6 people there to help lifting the individual pieces off the truck. We'll aim to start offloading at 11am. I'll also rent the tools to drill the holes in the concrete so we can do that too. With a little help and luck we should be able to get the whole thing running by the time the sun sets.
I'll provide pizza and soda. Feel free to bring any extra items you like.
Thanks to Milt for letting me ship to his business and use his delivery truck!!!!
My addy is
27042 124th Ave SE
Kent, WA 98030
Let me know who can make it,
Pat

Pat, I can be there by like 2pm if that helps! I have your garage warming gift as well. Also, I will bring the detail supplies and run them over your car if we have time.

Not sure of my work schedule for that day yet but, I have a roto-hammer and bits to drill the concrete if I can make it. What size bit do you need? Probably 3/4" possibly 5/8?

That would be GREAT!!! One less thing to rent from Home Depot. Unfortunately, I don't know for sure what size I'll need as I don't have the paperwork yet. Let me know when you find out if you can make it and just bring everything from 1/2" - 1" just to be sure we have it covered.

Whenever you can get there. I'm sure we'll still be putting it together then.

Mark, I just got a copy of the manual in .pdf. It says 3/4" Masonry Bit.
Other required tools I don't have include a large pipe wrench and a Hex Key/Allen Wrench set.

You really don't have a large pipe wrench or a set of hex/allen wrenches? You need to spend more time in the Sears Tool Section!! LOL. Out of curiosity, what size allen wrenches do you need?

Pat:
We got tools up the kazoo around here. Check with me before you rent any tools. I think we have a rotohammer, I'll have to confirm that it is business owned and doesn't belong to one of the guys personally. We can meet here early to get our act together.

I have a 16" long 3/4" bit, should be long enough :D Looks like I'll be able to make it. Even if I have to meet the framers in the morning, I can swing by after. Do you know what the thickness of your slab is? Is there a thickened slab under where the legs go? Is this a 2 post or 4 post lift? I have some epoxy if needed too. Most any tool you need I probably have in my van, some of my allen wrenches grew legs, but I have a few, depending on the size you need.

It didn't list a size on the allen wrenches, so I'm not sure what size on that one. I'll probably come across it in the manual. It's like 60 pages and I haven't read it all the way through yet.
It's a 2 post lift. Spec says the slab needs to be 4" of 3000psi and I have 6" of 3500psi. The anchor holes are supposed to be 4.5" deep according to the manual.
Milt, I have to drop some girls off that morning for a church youth group activity, but I should be able to be down at your business by 10am. Does that work for you?

Cool. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can get done. There's a pretty good chance my electrician will be able to make it too, so we just might be able to get it working by the end of the day.

UPDATE!!!!!
Due to shipping issues the lift is stuck in Portland and won't get here 'till Monday. Therefore I have to push back the install party to the 28th.
Let me know if that's going to be an issue for you Mark.
I very much appreciate your willingness to help and hope the 28th will still be doable.
Thanks,
Pat

I'll look for the lift at our place on Monday and will reschedule the delivery for Saturday 2/28.
I'm sure you are disappointed that you have to wait yet another week for your new toy.

This whole garage project has been a case study in delays. It's been very frustrating. We started the process in March '08 and had initially hoped to have it done and in service by the 4th of July '08. grumble grumble grumble

Bummer on the delivery. Next weekend my daughter is moving, but one way or another I can bring the roto hammer. I may not be able to stay all day though. We'll work it out somehow.

Hey Pat, are you going to try to be at the shop when the delivery arrives? If there is any freight damage that is the time to flag it.
If you come by we can do a tool list to see what we have on hand that you need. We have a rotohammer that we can use, but I've never used it personally.
What did you have in mind?

I just checked the tracking number and it arrived at the Yellow Freight dock in Seattle today, for delivery tomorrow. I don't know what time it will arrive. They're supposed to call, but haven't.
What time do you normally take your lunch? I can probably be to your place around noon and stay 'till 2pm. Then I have to be off to my own work.

Pat:
I bring my lunch so I'm here all day. You pick a time. Usually the truckers want a four hour window, or more, so I'm not sure how that will work.

And it's about time! So, we're now officially a GO for this Saturday!!!! 11am at my place. Milt, how about 10am at yours to load it up?
miltvine
02-25-2009, 05:00 PM
Pat:
As we talked about, I can prolly load it up myself. Unloading, well, that is another matter entirely.
I wonder if you had an engine lift that we could use inside the truck to support the thing while we take apart the shipping brackets, that might make life easier. You know, those a-frame units on wheels used to pull engines out of cars?

Pat:
Got a head count? I'm thinking we need at least 4 maybe 5 guys to lift those suckers. Those pieces are prolly 400 - 500 lbs each? A bunch of old guys may not be the best way to go?
I'm wondering if we would do better to separate those pieces here in the shop where we have a forklift to work with and then put them in the truck on skids? Then all we have to do at your house is get them out of the truck. Otherwise, we have to donkey them off the carrier in the confined spaces of the truck. Seems smarter to me to do it here?
Ideas?

Pat:
My maintenance guy offered to come in Sat. AM at 9:00 to help me separate the pieces and put them on separate skids. Are you available to join us?
I'm afraid of the safety issues of trying to manhandle those pieces in the truck.
Here is what it looks like now:

If just the guys who promised to show with tools are there, plus us, that makes 5. There's a couple others who said they'd be there too, so we'll have plenty of manpower. Load a pallet jack on the truck and we'll have a dolly too.
I'm pumped for this!

Sure, I can be down there at 9ish. That'll give me a chance to sort through some of the pieces anyhow.

Thanks again to Milt, Don, Mark, and all the other guys who showed up to help. I couldn't have done it without you all.
I posted the pics on my facebook page and sent them also to John for the newsletter. John, let me know whether you got the message and the pics. I tried using the facebook system rather than e-mailing the pics.
All in all, the job was more straight forward than I expected. We made a few mistakes along the way as the directions left some doubt about which post was which(Don figured it out). Once we got it squared away we probably only took about 3 hours of real work to get it all set up. It's not quite 100% yet, as my electrician won't be able to put the finishing touches on 'till Monday. I'll send John a couple more pics once we have it working.
Thanks again guys! It was a great day and a great relief for me to finally have my project "done". It only took a full year. :(
