(3) The Long Island NY GTO Club announced that one of their members, Major Jeffery R. Calero, 34, was killed in action on October 29, 2007 while conducting a combat patrol in the southern Afgan city of Kajaki while serving with ODA 2132 of Company C, 1st Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne). This was his second deployment in support of operation Enduring Freedom.
Major Jeff Calero owned a 1970 GTO convertible. His plan was to restore his car upon completion of overseas service. At the L.I. GTO Club's car show in May of 2008, Paul's Rods and Restos of Deer Park was present at the show and learned of the tragedy that befell the Calero family. Paul offered to complete the restoration of Jeff's GTO free of charge. In addition to providing parts for the restoration, the L.I. GTO Club has created a 50 / 50 raffle to pay foe the balance of parts needed. The raffle is limited to 2,000 tickets at $10 per ticket. The $20,000 raised will be split in half, with half the funds going to cover the parts needed and the other half going to one luck winner.
The drawing will be held on May 17, 2009 at the annual GTO sponsored show. The L.I. GTO Club plans to present the completed GTO to Jeff's family this summer. If you are interested in contributing to the 50/50 raffle please contact Mr. Steve Calabrese at (646)-337-2311.
OLD BUSINESS:
- NEW CLUB APPAREL – Mike Santella reported on Tom Palermo’s effort to check on other pricing for the club apparel. Turns out, Brad Barrie’s pricing was lower then Tom could provide. Mike explained that we would have to put $1,450 down and $1,450 when the apparel is finished. The discussion then turned to the issue of selling our apparel to non-members. Mike explained that we would have to renew our non-profit status and if we sell our apparel out side of the club to non-members, we would loose our non-profit status and the club would have to file tax documents. Denny Deal made a motion that we limit our apparel sales to members only the motion was passed by the attending membership. It was decided that we would send an order form out with our next Club Newsletter and get a good idea about which items the members wanted. We will tally the results and communicate these to Brad and make a final decision. John will publish the Newsletter in the next couple of weeks.
- SPRING CAR CLINIC – Denny Deal talked to the membership about having the Spring Car Clinic and the April Club Meeting on the same day, on either the 4th or the 11th. The attending membership voted to have the Monthly Club Meeting on the normal first Saturday, April 4th, and to hold the Spring Car Clinic at the SASCO Warehouse on April 11th. Directions will be published in the next Club Newsletter.
- CLUB MEETING LOCATION – Mike Santella introduced a motion to hold all monthly Club meetings until further notice at the Great American Casino in Tukwila. The motion was passed unanimously.
- JIM WANGERS VISIT - Mike Santella reported to the membership about his business trip to California and his effort to stop by and visit with Jim Wangers to reimburse him and his partner for the previous expenses they incurred when they visited the Club during Xmas. Jim gave Mike and Mark DaCosta a tour of his shop (lots of neat cars) and took them to lunch. Jim expressed his desire to visit our Club again next year, at Xmas time.
NEW BUSINESS:
- THIS YEAR’S TIGER RUN - Mike Santella reminded the membership of this year’s Tiger Run and encouraged everyone to start planning for the event.
- GTOAA 2009 Nationals – Mike Santella and Stefan Fafnis talked about this year’s National GTOAA meet. John Bazony brought up the idea of inviting someone from the GTOAA to come out to our Muscle Car Meet this summer or having someone from our Club go back and attend the GTOAA Nationals. Stefan suggested that we vote on sending someone from our Club. Other members suggested a more cautious approach, advising that we look into the cost first before deciding.
