Alright everyone, we are looking for the list of suggestions for destinations of our 2010, 2nd annual Pontiac Picnic in the Park. Please feel free to post your suggestions in this thread. We had a number of them at the meeting as well.
Wally, if you could post up the list from the meeting that'd be great.
I'll do some research on the suggestions and bring a top 3 list to the February meeting for a vote of the crowd favorite.
C'ya then,
Pat

Let's see if we can keep it within an hours drive, so more of the classics will come. That would also give us more of the day at the Picnic rather than a hurried drive to get there and back home. This should be more about the Picnic in the Park verses an all day cruise.

For reference, last year's cruise was about 2.5 hours from Issaquah to Leavenworth, or about 2 hours from Monroe to Leavenworth.
That is probably the upper limit of what this club will do. Once I have the list of destination sites I will prepare some start locations, routes and estimated drive times for everyone to vote on.

Good point Mark.
I would look at the event if the distance was an hour or less.

That was what I envisioned when I came up with the idea last year, a fairly local location so all the Pontiacs would come. We combined it last year with the cruise to Leavenworth because of time constraints getting the word out. It turned out great, but was too long of a drive for a lot of the people I talked to with older cars. The newer Pontiacs have no problem doing all day cruises at 65-75 mph but it's tough on the older ones.
I'm going to check out a couple places tomorrow and see if there is enough parking, etc. for a gathering. I'll report back if they check out.
I think we should do dash plaques starting this year. I wanted to last year but again, not enough time.

My daughter works for the Corp. of Engineers and gets sent to Mud Mountain Dam occasionally. She said it was real nice up there, and they have quite a few car shows there in the summer. She said if we want June or July we need to get it reserved as soon as we can because it's first come first served. There are 3 shelters, picnic tables, and BBQ's. Lot's of parking too I guess.

I have heard from several people that this location is a nice destination for clubs, but I have never been there.
What is the drive time to this location and has anyone made it recently?
What is the road condition like? Just thinking of the rutted up mess that was Rainier Run.
With the weather and the rain, the roads around Mt. Rainier sucked, frankly and the drive beat the crap out of us oldies.
Asphalt parking, or grass?
Bathrooms?
Can a seasoned Mud Mountain Dam alum fill us in?

I went there twice this past summer. The entry road is paved all the way to the parking lot and was in very good condition. There is a large, paved, parking lot. There are two large shelters with picnic tables and bar-b-ques that can be reserved in advance on a first come, first served basis. In the event that one is unable to reserve a shelter, there are numerous smaller shelters, with tables and bar-b-ques available on a first come, first served, daily basis. It is a very nice park. There is a wading pool for young'uns along with 4 play/ swing structures. There is also a hiking trail down the hill from which you can see the dam from several views. There is also a horse shoe pit or two! I liked it there and plan on returning in the future.

Parking: On the grass around shelter for up to 300+ cars
Hours reserved: All day - 9:00am to 8:00pm

I will post directions from various routes later, although directions are on the website.
I picked this date because it was after the weekend of the 4th, and 2 weeks before the Goodguys show, so hopefully we won't have any conflicts.
Get the word out to all the Pontiac owners you know. I'll get the flyers made up as soon as I can.
We should set up some group convoys from different areas to make it even more fun. Let me know some ideas on meeting spots from the north, south, east, and west, and I can put them in the flyer. If you just want to drive straight there from your home that's ok too.
Here's the shelter we will have, running water, 2 charcoal BBQs, some tables. and a big grass area for parking.
More later....

Put me down for whatever. I live near XXX in Issy so I could head up a meetup there for one thing. I think you just go to Enumclaw and up the mountain and turn right? We go that way to ski at Crystal and go Issaquah-Hobart through Ravensdale and Black Diamond and come out at the old pickle factory and turn left. Sound good?

Thanks Milt!
I'll pencil you in for a position.
You know those roads better than I, so I'll take your word for it as far as the route.
We'll see how many want to meet up at XXX and go from there.

Does that kiddie pool have chlorine in it? - I'd hate to be wading along & dredge a Baby Ruth up from the bottom...
Seriously, sounds like a great location with plenty of space and a fantastic club event.
Thanks for securing Mark!

I'd be happy to be a convoy organizer and will, of course, help with cleanup. I'm going to google map a couple routes and see what looks like fun.

The park opens at 9am so that would be the earliest we can get in to set up. I'm thinking the set up/parking volunteers should be there by 9:00-9:30, and begin registration by 10:00am. That should give the convoys time to meet up and get there. Timing on cruise starting times need to coincide with a 10:00am arrival if possible. Those meeting at the furthest points could join with the closer groups on a common route and grow that group as they go. Also that would give a chance for the stragglers that get caught in traffic a chance to catch up to the group. So, when you consider routes think about way points along that route to regroup. Some people will be coming from up north and will have a longer drive, that is why I think the later start time would be better. I plan to be there before 9:00am so that I can start setting up as soon as possible, anyone that wants to get there early is welcome to join me, I'll bring the donuts and fresh coffee. I'll give you my cell number to coordinate.
There are parking areas for the non Pontiac drivers, so even if you don't have your car running and want to join in the Picnic, feel free to do so.
Side note: I would like to do dash plaques this year if the membership agrees, We can vote on it at the February meeting if so.
