I'm starting this thread to keep track of and coordinate the convoy cruise locations.
If you have a good location to start a cruise from your area and want others to join you post here with the location. If you can meet up at a posted location speak up so that person isn't waiting in vain. After we get locations from several directions we can organize that phase of the day.
So far we have Milt V and Ted K meeting at XXX in Issaquah.
Also, here is the flier so far, I need the meeting locations to finsh it, then we can get them out to the masses.
The Micky D's at I-5 and Hwy 512 is used for Tiger Run and you can take 512 to the dam from there, that might be a good spot for some.
Updated flier! 4 locations!

Lookin' good.
A quick map search shows that both the McDonalds at 512/I-5 and the XXX in Issaquah make for a cruise of just under an hour. I give both locations a thumbs up! The hardest part will be deciding which one to join, since I live right in the middle.

Doing a little research on google maps, it looks like a group coming from the north on I-5 could head over to 167 and meet up with the group coming from 512. If we had a starting point for the I-5 group (maybe the Great American Casino?) that would give the Seattle, Burien, etc. and North people a place to start. Then find a spot for those two convoys to meet near the 410-167 junction (with restrooms hopefully). Even though the casino would be closed there is a Jack in the Box just up the street for coffee and restrooms.
Ideas?
Edit: After looking again looks like the Enumclaw Park on 410 would be where those two groups would meet. Not sure what is there. Also the Casino group could make a stop at the Jack in the Box on 15th in Auburn and take on more people there for those coming from the Kent/Auburn area.

This is a picnic so bring your own basket. Although I'm putting in an order for some pressure smoked pork ribs like I had last year and can increase the order if someone wants to add to the order. A friend does them for me all the time at pretty much cost and they are great. If anyone is interested I'll have costs as we get closer to the date, pork prices fluctuate.
There are 2 charcoal BBQs, running water and power for our use there if you want to bring burgers or dogs or something. I was asked about doing a potluck type of thing, but I think that would be too hard to organize.

There will be 4 cruise starting points this year, so we will need 4 cruise group organizers to head up each point. Anyone that knows they will be at one of the starting locations and would like to head up a group, let me know. It would require being at the location enough before the departing time (30 min?) to organize your group and make sure everyone gets any handouts and/or map of route. You need to have a cell phone so we can get updates on ETA, break downs, etc. Nothing real difficult to the job. This looks like it is going to be a larger event than last year and with 4 cruises we need to keep it organized.
I will be at Mud Mountain early, so I can't head up a group, I'm counting on you guys for help.
Here are the locations for each group (as in the flier) If you want to head up a group please post or PM me and I'll put you down.

I made a trip to the Dam Sunday and checked out the surroundings. Looks like a great place for the Picnic. The grass area where we will be parking the Pontiacs is level and dry. The shelter has restrooms, 7 picnic tables and two charcoal BBQs. There is a play area for the kids, and a basketball court for those that want to play. Across the parking lot are more play areas and a wading pool with a fountain.
Mark your calender now, and plan to be there!

Mark B
04-19-2010, 04:22 PM
Pat, it's probably best to google map it. It woud depend on the route you take. (starting point)As you get close there is a big sign at the entrance to turn, then it's a short drive to the gate. Lots of tire marks on that road. :D As you enter the gate/parking area the shelter/picnic area we have is on the right you can't miss it, you can see it from the gate. As we get closer I will print up some maps from each starting location. The "group leader" can hand them out before they take off.
If you know where the Muckleshoot casino is in Auburn, you drive right past it on one of the routes. Watch out for the speed cameras on that road (Auburn Way/Hwy 164) not too far past the casino.
By the way, we still need someone to head up the American Casino group. Any volunteers?

We're guessing about $7 per half rack at this point. Pork prices vary and we'll have exact pricing when we get ready to buy them. My buddy only charges me his cost on these and up till now he hasn't charged for smoking them (he's retired). A half rack is usually enough for one person. These are dry rubbed then pressure smoked, the sauce is on the side unless you want it put on when they are heated on the BBQ at the picnic. Did you want 2 half racks or two full racks? Either is doable.
ZIP-GTO
04-26-2010, 04:15 PM
Mark, put me down for 3qty 1/2 racks and I will still give you the full $25 to cover sauces and smokin. Can I pay you at the park? We will be leaving from the I5/512 Mcdonalds group.
Every year I try to do a couple things to the GTO last summer was a posi unit, pro rebuild on my q-jet carb and exhaust manifold gaskets. This year is a sway bar, boxed lowers, new bushings, and electric exhaust cut outs just to be obnoxsious as well as the 1/4 mi. My GTO only sees the road 4 weeks a year... time to excercise it.
We work and live overseas on Kwajalein US Army missile range in the Marshall islands where I run sandblasting and painting operations for the past 16 years.

Mark - nice recon work.
Dan Dickey from the Puget Sound POCI confirmed several cars from their club will be meeting up with the I5 / 512 group.
I am planning to head down with the Great American Casino group. A 7:45departure from Tukwila should to leave enough time to hook up with the I5/512 group and fuel up (breakfast wise) for the second leg of the cruise. Should be a dam good time.
Mark B
04-26-2010, 06:45 PM
Darin, at the park will be fine.
Mike, the Casino group meets with the Auburn group and departs the casino at 8:30. We still need someone to head up the Casino group, is that something you can do? A bunch of fliers are out already so changing routes wouldn't be good at this point.
Mark B

I've been trying to come up with some things to do while at the picnic, besides eyeballing all the Pontiacs, which goes without saying.
Some family games like badminton, Frisbee, etc. would be good, but I was also thinking of a Poker Walk. A poker walk is kind of like a poker run that we all have probably done on cruises except you do it walking through the event. We could do it like a 50/50 raffle and half would go to the winner, half to the club (or charity), or do 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and split the pot, 60/20/10 (or other) respectively to the 3 top place players. If this sounds like fun and doable, let me know and I'll post the the rules in another thread. The "dealer" tables would be scattered throughout the cars so that you would have to walk the whole show to get your hand.
Just an idea for some fun........

Issy-Hobart, under 18, through Ravensdale and Black Diamond, Krain Corner and pop out by the Pickle Works (now closed) at the east end of Enumclaw (the Scratch). That is the site of the start of the old Ranier run in some years. No freeway travel on that route.

Update ...
We've nailed down the cost on the dry rubbed pressure smoked pork ribs. If you want to place an order for the picnic you need to let me know as soon as you can. Price will be $7 per half rack which is usually enough for one person. They are smoked in half rack portions and are dry rubbed with a special blend of spices. The sauce will be on the side unless you want me to baste it on while I'm heating them on the BBQ at the picnic. I have these smoked by a friend/client that usually keeps his smoker busy this time of year smoking meats and cheeses for various organizations. He does them for me at cost of the supplies, and doesn't charge for his time. They the get vacuum sealed and refrigerated until put on the BBQ. (It's the under 40 degrees over 140 degrees rule)
So far I have orders for about 20 half racks and the list is growing, so get your order in now. :D

Hey, a huge traffic mess is going to happen that day. According to the WSDOT web site http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/I405/SR515Interchange/closure.htm I-405 will be entirely shut down both directions from 2:00 AM Saturday July 10 until 11:00 AM Sunday for removal of the old Benson Road Bridge crossing 405 in the S curves.
I-90 to I-5 is the alternate route. Don't even think of trying to go through downtown Renton.
The backroads route from the Issaquah Triple X will avoid this mess, but the backroads traffic will definitely be higher.
Heads up!

Wouldn't the Casino group be getting on I-405 just south of the closure? They will have the road to themselves. I doubt any detour traffic would end up on Interurban southbound. Northbound maybe?
But anybody headed home to the Eastside after the picnic will have to take the I-90 or SR 520 detour routes and those will be heavier than normal.
Me, I just plan to retrace my steps. I live near the Triple X.

from Hwy 410 and Crystal Mountain Blvd. A 40 mile ride. Don

8:30 is the posted time, but I figure we'll probably run a few minutes late just to make sure we give the stragglers a chance.

I'm sure glad it's going to cool down to 81, I've had enough of the mid 90s. I guess all the praying to the sun gods has worked!

I would like someone to confirm that the Tukwila group is meeting the Auburn group at Jack in the Box. Post #30 on page3 says the Tukwila group is going to meet the I5/ 512 group. Post 41 on page 5 says they are meeting the Auburn group at Jack in the Box as does the post that includes the maps on page 6. I don't want to leave before they get there if they're meeting up with us. :) car's washed and ready to roll....Let's go.

I took a "roll call" photo of each car that I saw and have 44 car photos and one bike with side car, plus we passed 2 Firebirds on the way out so I get that as 47 participating vehicles.
Here is the scan shot taken fairly early so not all the cars are in this.

I can post all 45 if anyone thinks it is worth the time.
Here is a big shout out to the people who organized this outing. Mark B and I don't even know who all. THANKS! That was fun! Even my non-car loving wife, Janet, enjoyed the day. Hopefully, my tunes didn't offend anyone.

After you guys left a couple firebirds showed up, a 68 green GTO, a 67 Tyrol blue GTO, Rick Rosen in his 65 GTO convert, and I think a couple of others. so that is at least 5 more for sure.

Thanks for the tunes Milt, great collection. Pictures are great too!. I'd like to put any and all pics in the archive that anyone took. PM for an email addy to send them to if you would. Thanks!
Thank you to all that showed up today, your presence made it a great day! Looks like everyone liked the park, at least I heard no ill comments about it and a lot of good comments. I was a bit busy and didn't get a chance to see all the cars before a couple took off but the ones I did see were great. Each year it gets bigger and bigger! The non Pontiac vehicles that came were all friends of someone with a Pontiac there, and seeing as this was an informal organized event we didn't object. The weather cooled off from the 90+ we've been having to a comfortable high 70's low 80's (I think, I didn't have a thermometer with me)
Betty took some pictures but I haven't seen them yet and as soon as I rest up a bit I will post them.
Thanks again to all that came! Put us on your calender for next year!

I've got 61 photos that add up to 176meg. I don't think you want me to email those. What I have is one of each car present (before I left) and a few of the whole group. If you want, I can burn a CD and send it to you or have you pick it up at work like last time. Whatever you want.
Or, I guess I can downsize those files and then email them to you. I'm not sure you want small files, though?
Sorry I missed that Tyrol Blue '67. That is my dream car (assuming it was a 4 speed.) Is that a club member?

I can pick up like last time or you can bring to next meeting if we don't get together by then. The Tyrol blue was a hardtop auto with a dual-gate and hood tach. He used to be a club member but hasn't renewed.

Those two firebirds sound like the pair of 70's that came in together just before I left. If there were a second pair then those plus 3 GTO would put us at 47 Pontiacs plus 5 other cars/trucks/vans and 3 motorcycles(the sidecar plus Lonnie and friend). Right around the 50 mark that was our 'realistic' goal. Well done all!
Hey Milt, if I were to stop by your work next week, would you have those pics with you? I could have you put them on my thumb drive.

Sure Pat, come on down. I keep them on my laptop that is with me all the time. I'm in from 6:30 AM until around 3:30 PM and this week I'm covering for our vacationing estimator so I'm chained to my desk all day. Stop by anytime and I'll copy them across.
I forgot about Lonnie and his friends scooters and I didn't count Mark B's IPod dock stand either. That makes it over 50.

Mark - on behalf of the club, thaks for putting all of this together. The ribs were excellent and you did a great job with the weather too.
Thanks also to our brothers and sisters in the three other Puget Sound Pontiac clubs, the Washington Firebirds, The Puget Sound POCI club and our new friends in the Pontiac G8 Club for turning out and supporting the event. It was great meeting you and getting to see some cars we don't normally get to see. I had 43 cars plus the support van and the mafioso Caddie on the grass by my count before we headed for home, which means the event grew in only its second year! I thought the Mud Mountain Dam Park was an excellent venue for this event. The drive was nice, the covered bbq area was great and we had plenty of room. Having the additional walk up viewers from the Harley Club who just happened to have chosen the same park for their poker run gave us even more to see.
Lonnie and Jerry were in heaven!
Looking forward to next year's event!

Thanks Mark, Betty, GodFather, Mrs. GodFather, picture takers, car parkers, etc. That was a well-executed picnic, and EXCELLENT ribs. Speaking of ribs, I ate so much I almost broke one. Cool cars, cool Harleys too (I couldn't resist). Let's just say there was a lot of eye-candy there. It was great to see everyone again!

These are a few scan shots at approximately mid-day. I have shots of most of the older cars present if anybody wants them.

Nice event. Many thanks to those who's effort and planning made it happen. The ribs were very tasty, and helped fuel my pedal up to Sunrise lodge the following day. A double whammy week end for me. Don

This was my first event with the club and it was truly enjoyable. Great to see so many awesome vehicles. Best part was that the owners were as cool as their cars- everyone was so hospitable. My wife showed up on her Ural sidecar motorcycle and was welcomed without harassment. Wife said that the NW Legends was friendlier that other car/motorcycle groups she has met. Thanks for a wonderful Saturday in the park.
