Here are some pictures I took of the Rally 2's I repainted for Jim. I will recount the process I used in case someone needs the info. *Wheels were sandblasted clean (thanks Mark D.!!), then washed in soapy water, dried, cleaned again with paint prep and finally sprayed with self etching primer on both sides. I let this sit 24 hours before continuing. This first picture shows the rim after having sprayed the back side light gray. You can also see the masking for when I spray the other side.

This second picture shows the front side after painting with the Argent Silver. I used Eastwood paints. After 24 hours the mask kit that you get from Ames or Performance Years is applied. DO NOT RUB THESE ON. They will get sticky and leave glue on your paint. They should be gently applied. As you can see there is more masking to be done. Also notice that all the holes are masked so that no paint can get back onto the already painted backside.

This third picture shows the rim with the complete masking job of the center section. I mask off the entire perimeter of the center section and trim off the tape with an x-acto blade. Being carefull not to cut into the paint. The supplied masking kit doesn't always line up with the actual rim so some trimming is required. This will create a hard edge after painting which I think looks nice. From the tape outward will be masked off with newspaper.

Here is the rim after painting the center section and after removing the masking tapes and spraying both sides with clear coat. Be carefull when removing the masking tape and especially carefull when removing the masking kit pieces. DO NOT RUB THEM ONTO THE RIM. They have a tendency to stick and leave glue on the newly painted rim. If this happens, you can take some paint prep on a rag and dab it onto the glue. It is very touchy. Don't wipe it. It will smear your paint.

Here is the finished product. New Lugs and center caps. I HIGHLY recommend getting the center caps from Ames. The originals have metal tangs that WILL scratch your nice newly painted rims. The repos from Ames attach with a stud and lock nut and do not harm the rim or paint in any way. When you get your tires put back on and balanced make sure they are carefull. These were Static balanced. That means all weights on the inside. These came out pretty good and should last quite a while. Hope that this encourages others to take the plunge to make your Rally 2's into show stoppers. Good Luck!!

One problem here, never use etch prime over sandblast,it is to rough of a surface.Etch prime should be only applied over 180 grit or finer. The acid in the etch will eat in to the top of the high spots and then lay in the valleys. The best is an epoxy none sanding primer for sandblasted parts, this will give you the best adhesion along with corrosion protection.Epoxys cane be recoated up to 7 days with out sanding!

Thanks for the info. Although I didn't see any major rough spots, I did take some 400 grit sandpaper to the rim surfaces while washing. Not sure if that helped or not. But, I think they came out ok considering the use of spray cans and no paint booth. I'll have to remember that about the primer for next time. Any info to keep our cars looking and running great is very much appreciated. Thanks again!!
