Bob, There are two schools of thought on this. What you have is a 3/8" tape kit which is the coiled up sticky rope that was used from the factory. Adequate for installing a windshield, but not the best when it comes to keeping rain out. If the only water your car will see is out of a garden hose, you will be fine. If this is more of a daily driver, Think about a urathane install. Urethane comes in a caulking tube and makes a much better seal against moisture. Every car built anywhere, today, utilizes this kind of application for this very reason. Both installs are relatively simple. Cut out the old shield, if it is still in the car, clean out the pinch weld of any old tape kit or urethane, lay in the new tape kit or urethane and center the new windshield. It helps to have a friend give you a hand if possible. Two sets of eyes and hands are better than one. If you have rust in the pinchweld, (the surface that the tape kit and glass rest on) make surt to treat it with a rust inhibitor, or the rust will continue to eat at the metal in your pinchweld and prevent a good seal. Also, try to handle the tape kit as little as possible. The natural oils from your hands will impare a good tape kit to glass seal. Latex gloves work well to help prevent this. A little long-winded, but important, if you don't want to do it twice! Good luck.

Another good thing to remember is, The warmer the work area the better, Especially with the rope method!!

Being a firefighter I have to add my 2 cents... GTO_AL will agree with this.. Your front windshield is a main sorce of support.. WIth out the glass (broken or not) your "A" posts aren't very strong. They collapse with out the glass. You may not agree with me, but after seeing proof of car roll overs with and with out the windshields is very scary. If it was me I would take it to a professional shop. Stay and watch how they do it to make sure they dont take short cuts and wear rubber gloves.. If you get ten free dinners with the glass replacement.. Its not a good deal! LOL... But thats just my opinion.

Stay safe!!

I called a mobile shop, 45.00 later, the glass was in with a urethane seal. I had taken the glass out and cleaned and painted the pinch weld area. Good luck.
