Since I'm getting my engine built, I thought I'd take my '66 Muncie M20 to the shop for an inspection. I knew it needed some work, as it sometimes grinds going from 4th to 3rd, and there is a lot of free play in the input shaft. Well it looks like in addition to those problems, which would be fixed with a basic rebuild, 2nd gear is bad, as is the 1st-2nd gear shift collar, and the 2nd gear shift fork. Total cost will be $888 to get it fixed. Ouch. How much is too much to spend on this tranny? Should I consider a Richmond 5-spd? Do they take much work and $ to install into a 66 GTO?

Where are you having it rebuild? The cost of a 5sp is $1500 or so, it can be put in with a couple mods. Can't use console, shifter won't fit console. Need a different bell housing, I had a lakewood scatter shield hooked up to my 5sp in my 66. I guess it comes down to is, how much money do you have to go fast. ;D

Thanks for the info Kevin.
I took it to Gary Tischer. I've heard nothing but good things about him and his shop. Is $888 too much to sink into a Muncie?
Thanks!

That sounds about right. I had my Chrysler Hemi 4-speed rebuilt in '99-'00 for about that.

If it's the numbers matching transmission to the car, than I would say almost no amount of money would be too much to fix it. If not, then it's what your bank account can afford. Or whatever your wife says. ;) Did you get an estimate? You might try getting some other estimates if that's too high. Check out this website for lots of KILLER info on all types of transmissions. Did you know you can buy NEW Muncie cases? Check it out here:

Not sure where you are but I know somene out of West Seattle who seemed confident he could beat that price.
He's a personal friend of mine and I'll vouch for his rep.
If you're intersted, 206-938-0324. Ask for Bill and tell him John Price sent you.

Thanks for the replies! I decided to stay with my Muncie and gave the go-ahead to rebuild it. (Don't tell my wife how much it is though) ;)
