I have a brand new fuel tank and filler neck and I know that it's all fine and installed correctly. What's happening is this...apparently with a 3/4 full or even fuller tank, fuel is apparently coming out of the mouth of the filler neck where the cap screws on when, well, we do what GTOs are made for, get on it !

Mike D. of Precision Speedworks says that he's seen this with other 68-72 A bodies, including chevelles and 442s. Basically he says it's a bit of a design flaw. For quite some time I've noticed fuel deposits on my license plate, rear bumper, and the sheetmetal below the rear bumper.

Anybody else have this problem ??? Mike D. suggest running with a half tank or less whenever I intend to press the accelerator pedal down hard.

Bruce, are you using a locking gas cap or the standard cap? I had a locking cap and it leaked. You need to use a non-locking cap. If it is a standard cap, how old is it? I guess you "Got Torque"!! ;)

I am using a standard, non-locking cap of unknown age. It could be 20 years old. Hmmmm, that's young ;D ;D
But maybe over the hill for a gas cap??

Hi Thor,

Well the gasket on that 20 year old cap may be shot, I have that problem with my 68 GTO.
When it is past 1/2 tank, it leaks out the filler. I have not tried a new cap, I seem to forget to pick one up as I don't drive the cars as much as I used to. ::)

Anyway I would try a new cap & also make sure your breather vent is clear.
