View Full Version : Tuning a Holley Carb

Well, the 3.5" exhaust make a difference for my induction. When I picked up the car from the muffler shop, it idled really rough. When I got it home, I adjusted the idle screws richer and the idle smoothed out a bit. However, it's still not idling as well as I'd like and the fuel smell is overpowering.:P
Anyone have advice on tuning / adjusting the 4150? It's a 950 CFM and I'm running it with a Torker II, ported E-heads, and a solid flat tappet cam with just over .530 lift for both intake and exhaust. Duration is about 230 and there's a definite lope at idle.
Hi GP,
I am in the same boat as you are.
I have the same carb on my 468 and just got my 3 inch exhaust in. Time for carb tuning for me too. I have an appointment with Mr. Bisschop on Sat. morn with the car and will take notes and report back to you on anything I can

Hey, I'd appreciate that. If I still don't have it running right myself by late in September, I'll probably do the same thing, as I'll be on the mainland again.

Hey GP..
What are you running for an air cleaner? Could it be causing a restriction in the intake ??

I'm running one of those Edelbrock triangular shapped cleaners that has the foam filter. There's not a lot of clearance between the hood and the air cleaner though. I'd say about half an inch between the front of the cleaner and the underside of the hood.
I wouldn't think the clearance would be a problem though, as there still appears to be more area for flow than with the stock air cleaner.

I'm not sure how well foam flows air, You might try removing the foam leaving the base plate on and see if there is a differance. My thinking is, maybe the air filter was adequate for your old exhaust system, but your new system flows better so your filter needs to flow better... Is there a K&N filter for that application??
Although I may be Wacky... ;)

I just got the 3 inch Wed eve so what you heard was probably the 2.5 inch. I'm now running that Pypes 3 inch X from Performance Years. It's got a deeper tone but I think it's a tad more quiet. Anyway I could tell right after some launches in Renton on the way home that it was what Dr. Pontiac would've prescribed ;)
Glad you liked what you heard Bill ;D

Hey Bruce ...
It was the 3" system, Bob told me you had just got it. I told Bob i was lookin forward to hearing it. Bob was looking for someone to tow the boat to Tukwila, But i was busy so my dad took did it. Your right it does sound quieter, but more beefy!! ;)

Ahh, after going to the shop this morning at about 7 to pick up the Palladium Pounder and finding the boat gone, I figured it out. Whoa, with the new exhaust, carb spacer, and the tuning at SuperDave's shop today, it's running better than it ever has. It's even more fun to bang the gavel now. ;D

Bruce ...
Can you put your reply on here so we can all learn a lil ?? ;) ;)

Well, we learned that I have wear on the bronze gear on my distributor after only 1500 miles, causing my advanced timing settings to retard.
I've now installed a polymer distributor gear from BOP engineering and re-set timing again. Initial is at 17, full advance=35. Went down two jet sizes on the primaries to 87 for a tad better fuel consumption while cruising. Air idle circuits were okay.
So, here's a question for you experienced folks--I have just noticed that the contacts on the inside of my distributor cap are starting to look like they have a bit of corrosion on them, a green material that kinda looks like the stuff you'd see on copper that's oxidized. It's got little chunks of the stuff forming. This is a MSD billet distributor and it has about 1700 miles on it. Am running a Crane HI-6 ignition. Is this corrosive junk that I'm seeing normal? Is it caused by having a multi spark box in a performance engine?
