Had another question; has anyone used the "complete kit" offered for $1000 at Ames for disc brake conversion? My car has serious issues stopping w/ manual drums. I've got very strong legs though now. HA HA. any other advice on this would be helpful as well. I hope to make your Jan meeting to officially join the chapter. J

Welcome to the forum GTO Joe.
I have a '70 GTO with factory power front disks. I added disks to the rear and they're from a Ford Explorer. They stop on a dime and give 9 cents change to boot. The kit was only about $450.

I was mostly interested in at least the fronts. I have manual drums all around. You know the drill, pump three times before applying brakes etc. I just don't know if the $1k is worth it; it says it comes w/ all parts needed incl lines. J

I installed a front kit from "Stainless Steel Brakes". It is their kit but I actually purchased it through Original Parts Group because they offered the correctly plated brake booster. I felt that the 1K was worth it compared to taking a set from a donor car because most of the used sets I found ran $350-$450. Then I would have wanted to replace bearings, seals, pads, rotors and calipers at a minimum because the used ones I looked at all looked like they had sat out in the elements, unused for way too long. This way I got new spindles, baking plates, brake lines, booster and master cylinder too.

It was an easy swap and a convenient time to rebuild the front end. Like night and day as far as a difference in stopping! Best upgrade for the money with the exception of a 1-1/4" front sway bar.

My '69 lemans has the same (manual/drum) brake setup and it's fine for a 350 2bbl driver. Serious horsepower must be a bear! Ya can't go if ya can't stop. :?

Well I don't know how you do it. I'm running a little hotter cam, headers and 2 1/2 in exhaust etc. and it runs close to 375 horse. After two or three hot stops, there ain't much there. I'll be doing the conversion after I can find the $$$ !! :) J

I'll do that. I'm just leaving work in Seattle now. I would've made the meeting last weekend but had prior thing to do. I'll make the one in Feb to finally join. J
