According to Pete McCarthy's book a casting number of "979991" indicates the block is a RA IV.
Maybe the fact there is no block code indicates it was a service replacement?

service replacement? are the block codes on a 70 block in the same place as the others? this one has nothing there never was. do ram air blocks not have them? we would like to know what this came out of. judge maybe?

The casting number indicates it's a RA IV and I vaguely recall seeing somewhere that service replacement blocks sometimes didn't have block numbers. It kinda makes sense, because if the dealer has to replace a block under warranty, they'd have to use the same part but--if the block was manufactured ahead of time in anticipation of repairs--they'd have no way of knowing in advance whether the block was going into an automatic car, a 4 speed car, a hard top, or a convertible. Therefore, the block numbers wouldn't be all that relevant.

One question for you now, is the casting # an original cast #, or has that area been ground smooth and the casting# stamped in place? I purchased a 69 RA/IV service replacement block a few years ago and this is how they did it. On the front of the engine, down by the oil pan should be some #'s and an (SR) stamp also. Your timing cover may be hiding this like it does on mine though. My block is dated 71 I believe which means they took the block, ground the #'s and restamped it. To my understanding, this is how they do the SR block. What a neat block to have, probably worth a good chunk of change.

the casting #'s are raised numbers on the back pass side of block with 70 raised by the dist. hole. there is no numbers on the front of the block where they always are. the block is a 4 bolt main. thanks for all the info. the guy my bro bought it from back in 86 said it came out of a 70 judge but you know how that goes. we just figured it was time to try to figure out if it was what is was suppose to be.
