View Full Version : Oil filter question
Is the napa gold 1045 a suitable filter for our V8s?
What kinds of filters are you guys running, especially those with headers such as the hooker sc types?

The filter adapter that came with my 428 is 90 degrees and doesn't angle back toward the block like some others. As a result, I had to relocate my oil filter in order to clear my Hooker SCs. My Hookers have 2" primaries, which may contribute to the clearance problems.
I'm running Purolator "Pure Ones" on my relocated filters. I've read lots of stuff about how people should steer away from Fram--particularly the non-hi-po stuff.

I've got the correct angled filter mount on my LeMans. I use only the short filters made by WIX. (Blake has them)
I take my oil and filter to any of the oil change places and pay them to wrestle the filter into place above my Hooker Competitions. Usually they complain that they can't get the filter in/out but I just smile and tell them to keep trying. :) I stand there and watch what they're doing so that I make sure that they're doing it right and not short-cutting. I then have them hose off the passenger header as best as they can.
If I stay with the Hookers, I'll be relocating the filter. It's a pain in the a##.

I run the PF24 AC filters (shorty). It's not that big of a deal to change the oil with headers, kinda messy thou. :?

I have a couple of cars that can get messy changing filters. I have these large clear heavy guage plastic bags, 16" x 11" or so; My Challenger has the filter horizontally mounted so I put this bag around just before it comes off and it keeps the oil in the bag. You slip any bag over the filter and can turn by hand with the bag in place.

I'm running Hooker SC 1 3/4" on my 66 and even the full size oil filters (NAPA 1049) fit easily. I guess I'm lucky. Like Brad, I put a plastic bag around the filter before removal which helps with the mess. Then I fill the new filter with oil and cut a square of plastic wrap and place it over the filter with a rubber band to hold it in place. A rag goes on top. This keeps the oil from coming out as I work the filter in place. Once in position, I remove the rag/rubber band/plastic and screw her in.
