View Full Version : Rainier Run 2004
Rainier Run 2004 will be July 24th. I'm beginning the process of putting the event together. To make another GRRREAT event this year it will take volunteers. The slots open are: Check-point coordinator, all the check-points, and last car out. Please, feel free to contact me at angusshops@hotmail.com or call. More information at next meeting. Any and all help would be great. Thank you, Lara :D

Lara - this is excellent news! Rainier Run is an awesome and respected event - and would be sorely missed in it's absence.

I would like to do some video from one of the checkpoints, and put it on DVD for the club. Not sure which checkpoint that would be.

Mark B,
this is off subject but did you see the 67 GTO convertible that Drager's on Aurora has for sale?
Mark B
03-08-2004, 08:58 PM
No I didn't. I am not actively looking, but if I come across the right one at the right time, then......
Wanting a Tyrol Blue with white interior and top, I will do a frame off, so I don't really want a "completed" car.
Thanks for the heads up though!

So I'd like to answer Mark B's question. Maybe some of you with actual experience at the site could confirm.
The Eatonville site is a vista point and if the weather allows, has a great view of Mount Rainier.
Anyone.... am I wrong?
So can I put you down as a volunteer at Eatonville? :)
Mark B
03-08-2004, 09:28 PM
Al mentioned a good spot for video, but I can't remember which one now. I don't mind any spot as long as I can get good angles on the cars. I do have a 10' x 10' pop up I could bring.

Mark,
The spot I mentioned is Morton. They'll have power and you can get the car's coming off the road and circling in the parking lot. Tipsoo would be great getting the cars coming into the check point with Mt. Rainier in the close background but power for the camera is slim to none. Mather might not be a bad place and may have power. Ohanapakosh wouldn't be good, too much shade and not much room and Eatonville .. no power that either, gravel parking area. Thought about having another driver drive and you film cars going around you, following, leading, as you go around them, etc etc
So, off subject, Mark D. tell us about your new '67 GTO convert that you're gonna buy off that lot LOL. What's it got going? And no, I'm not interested LOL.. two is enough.
And to think one is in need of a frame off and it just happens to be originally a Tyrol Blue with white top and interior car too. Sorry Mark B, not for sale.

I could also video from Tipsoo Lake and give you the tape/video so you could get any footage from it. Its digital video, if we dont have the same set up, I could always burn it to cd for you. Sounds like you have a pretty nice camera if you need power tho.

My video cam is not real fancy but does great video, it is digital. I could always pick up extra batteries so I wouldn't need power I suppose. I like Als idea of a roaming cam, could get some great shots that way. A stationary cam should also be setup though to be sure to get all the cars, I wouldn't want anyone left off the tape. Kevin, your offer on more footage would be great, and if anyone else could do some shooting we could make a nice multi-cam video. I could talk my daughter and son in law into coming and bring thier camera to get another viewpoint. She is the speed demon of the family, well next to dad of course, so I am sure she would do it. This could shape up to be a worthwhile project.
Al, you just like teasing me with that car don't you :?

GTO_AL,
I don't know anymore detail other than there is a 67 GTO Rag at Dragers in Seattle. Red with a white interior & gay looking hupcaps on it. Looks to be too bright to be an original color. Never seen it before to be a local car.
It is on collectortraderonline.com
I am really glad to see all the excitement over Rainier Run. If you (anyone) has ideas for sponsors, let me know. I am looking for business that you work with and enjoy their product or services. Thank you.

Thanks Denny!
It turns out that I won't be able to make the meeting this weekend so I would really appreciate it if you could bring this up in the meeting for me.
July seems like it's a fair bit away but it will sneak up on us quickly.
I need to get these positions filled soon so that I can avoid the Wrath of Lara. (Just kidding... Though I really would like to avoid disappointing her.)
We're looking for one experienced person or couple to man each checkpoint so that we can train new people to be veterans for the next event.
If anybody has some suggestions for making the Eatonville checkpoint more habitable for the workers there, I'm willing to provide any reasonable amenities that I can to make it an attractive post to work.
Thanks!

Printable flyer is available HERE (http://www.northwestlegends.com/media/rainier-flyer.pdf). Must have ADOBE ACROBAT (http://www.adobe.com) to read it.
Just a reminder that Rainier Run is really getting close (July 24). EVERYONE is welcome. I have gathered some really GRRREAT prizes, everything from a Costco gift card, $25.00 to another EMP family membership! The drive is really fun. Each check point is staffed with really neat people. If you have not met other club members now is the time! Print up a flyer and give it out to all your friends. I can not wait to see EVERYONE there!!

Rainier Run 2004 is Saturday! It is going to get into the high 80's if not up to 90 out. So why not be up in the mountians where it is cool!! I am looking forward to seeing everyone there
Looks like I'll be riding solo tomorrow.....Paula can't make it. If you still need some help at the check points or the Orting sign-up position, I should be able to help....or if there is a last minute cancellation.
I'd do last car...but short of giving someone a jump or a slap on the back I wouldn't me of much help.

Nice job to all who worked so hard on this great event!! I did, however, have an encounter with a very large elk just outside of Packwood. He probally heard about the legendary GTO and wanted to take a closer look at a real Mountain Goat. He did dart out in front of my passenger side fender, but fortunately, I saw him in time to avoid him. Beautiful animal, but don't think he would make a very attractive hood ornament on my GTO.

It was a fun packed weekend. Friday got to check out the Pacific NW Nationals at Pacific Raceways with fellow legends members follwed by Rainier Run, then to wrap things up another trip out to the Races to see Eliminations Sunday. Ahhh the smell of Nitro was awesome!
Friday night There we were sitting atop our reserved seats behind the starting line (Well it was a picnic table situated perfectly above the action with a great shot of the the cars leaving the line and downwind of the nitro-methane and tire smoke). Right next to us a cart rolls up and stops - it's The King Kenny Bernstein all decked out in his BUD wear. Along comes another legend, Don "The Snake" Prudhomme who climbs in next to Kenny just to shoot the bull.
Saturday it was my first trip out to try my shot at Rainier Run. Dan Willms is in town from Canada and takes on the job of navigating from the co-pilots seat in the '70 Challenger. Amber was there at the check in and comes along as the official photographer and to ice us down during the trip around the mountain. It was a fun trip although with temps nearing 100 it was a bit much for a long cruise. The scenery was awesome and the Challenger performed flawlessly even in the searing heat. Thanks to all who helped make it all happen.

Regarding the error some people were getting - I've seen it from time to time, and it usually coincides with a maintenance job by the webhost (Spry). Often when they're making changes to the web server, there is brief glitches like this. Sorry for the probs, should be cleared up by now.
