A Legend Has Fallen
Mar 05, 2014 - 9:05 AM - by LonnieS
LonnieS's Avatar Members, friends, and fellow Pontiac enthusiasts, it is with heavy heart that we say goodbye to our Fallen Legend - Mark E. Bilyeu.

Mark joined our club in 2003, where I met him at one of our club meetings. Right away I could tell he was a friendly guy and knew his stuff about Pontiacs. Mark told me about the dozens of GTO's that came through his possession, and some of the cool restorations he worked on. He and his wife Betty have been a fixture in our club ever since, organizing events like the Pontiac Picnic in the Park, assisting in the Northwest Muscle Car Meet and American Muscle Car Show, publishing the Legendary Lines club newsletter, helping me with the awards ceremonies at the end of each year, and so many other vital operations that keep the club running. Through the years, Mark and my dad Wally had become very good friends and together they worked on many projects like these.

Mark never received the recognition he deserved because he so quietly devoted himself to the club. He never needed a spotlight or podium - or wanted one either. He was happy just to be a part of an organization composed of friends and family that shared his passion for Pontiacs. He enjoyed everyone so much, and always looked forward to our meetings and events. Everyone knew Mark and always expected to see him at our venues. What we are left with now are his memory, his legacy, and shoes that can never be filled.

Mark was a man of many talents, and helpful to everyone in so many ways. He was a general contractor and helped my family renovate our home. Mark was a skilled auto mechanic and restoration expert - his workmanship can be seen on many Pontiacs including Wally Santella's '64 GTO and John Lund's '67 GTO. He helped several club members with various home repair projects too. In fact Mark committed so much of himself to helping friends and family that he had little time or resources left to help himself. They don't build 'em like that anymore.

To honor Mark, and to recognize his dedication as a legendary club member, the Northwest GTO Legends have elected to rename our member of the year award to the: "MARK E. BILYEU AWARD” For Outstanding Membership Participation.

We will hold a Memorial Service to honor Mark on July 12th, at 10:30am, at the “Pontiac Picnic In The Park” - a Club event that Mark had coordinated since 2009. This event is held at the Mud Mountain Dam in Enumclaw, WA. Mark will be cremated and his ashes will be spread at this site. The club voted to change this venue's name to: “The Mark Bilyeu Memorial Pontiac Picnic in the Park”.

Friends, family and club members are all invited to celebrate Mark's life at his nephew's house - Orville (Jamie) Gilbertson - 13117 22nd Ave South, SeaTac, WA 98168. The celebration will be March 22nd, at 6:30 PM. This will be a potluck-style event, so please bring food and refreshments.

God Speed Mark, we will all miss you dearly.

Welcome to the Northwest GTO Legends official website. We are excited to bring GTO enthusiasts a club that caters to the total GTO experience. Whether your into racing the Great One, showing off your prized Poncho, restoring a GeeTO to it's former glory, or just enjoy the company of people that do - we've got just the ride for you. We also offer a fantastic newsletter, Legendary Lines, with color features, tech info, stories, and member cars.

Whether you are a member or not, we invite you to use our message boards. Click on the "Forums" button (top) and follow the simple registration instructions. You'll be done in seconds.

We are an official chapter of the GTOAA (GTO Association of America), the 13th to be exact, and got things started way back in 1984-1985. It all started with 3 GTO nuts wanting to start a GTO fraternity in our part of the Northwest. Over the years, the club has evolved with many great people getting involved and contributing their time, effort, and personalities to make it the awesome experience that it is today. Our goal is simple, bring enjoyment to the hobby of owning, driving, and appreciating the greatest musclecar, the original, the Pontiac GTO.

Some of the activities that keep us busy throughout the year include attending car shows (including the famed Tiger Run), cruise nights, swap meets, parades, picnics, bowling nights, car member work parties (resurrecting the D.A.R.E. '69 GTO, Team Royal Botkin), an annual Holiday Party, our annual Rainier Run, which draws cruiz fans from all over and the biggie, our own Northwest Musclecar Meet which gathers the finest musclecars in the region once a year. After all these years, it's still the best & only show of it's kind in the Northwest.

Being a Chapter of the GTO Association of America, our membership fees include additional membership in the GTOAA National Club. The National prints a monthly newsletter that is nothing short of fantastic. You wouldn't believe all the GTO owners around the world! They also feature a car of the month, technical articles and a GREAT classified section that is free for advertisements by members.

We would like to make this an invitation for you and any other Musclecar enthusiast you know to join our club. Come to our next meeting and see what we're all about! You need not own a GTO to join, all we ask is that you are interested in preserving America's finest musclecars, and the purpose of our club.

For in state members, we ask that you attend a meeting to complete the membership process. Below are a couple useful links. You can fill out the membership app electronically; the TAB key to move from field to field, then print out the results and mail the app to the address specified along with the fee. 12-month membership renewal fees are due by December 31st of each year. The rest of the details are on the application.
